Pelican Puppet Making
Protect the Pelicans! Make your own pelican puppet out of paper as you learn how climate change is drying out the Great Salt Lake and harming its pelican population.
Goal 𖤣𖥧.𖤣𖥧.𖤣𖥧𖡼.𖤣𖥧
Raise awareness about how climate change is impacting the Great Salt Lake and its pelican population, and provide clear and direct ways to get involved with an active local nonprofit.
Process 𓆝 𓆟 𓆞 𓆝 𓆟
Local nonprofit Save Our Great Salt Lake taught audiences to fold pelican puppets. We thought of it as a fanciful, futile effort to repopulate declining pelican populations. They made this great instruction/info sheet. You can download it yourself: Pelican Flier.pdf (available in Spanish)
Nearby, Brolly Arts screened their short film Illusion of Abundance, sharing Indigenous perspectives on the Great Salt Lake.
Before the show, Save our Great Salt Lake members greeted the audience with water flags and banners. After, they reprised a song and puppetry parade originally created for a vigil for the Great Salt Lake during a recent state legislative session. The parade showcased puppets of species that are part of the lake's ecosystem.
